Ramallah - The EU Civilian Operations Commander Hansjörg Haber paid a two-day visit to occupied Palestinian territories where he visited EUBAM Rafah and EUPOL COPPS and met a number of Palestinian officials including the Palestinian Prime Minister, his deputy and minister of Justice, as well as representatives of the international community.
The Head of Mission of EUBAM Rafah, Gerhard Schlaudraff, informed Mr. Haber on the significant role of the European Union Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM) Rafah at the time of its deployment at the Rafah Crossing Point. “Our aim was to provide a Third Party presence at the Rafah Crossing Point in order to contribute to its opening to ensure the basic right of freedom of movement for the ordinary people in Gaza and to build up confidence between the Government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA)’’.
During his meetings, Mr. Haber stressed that the EU stands ready to reactivate EUBAM Rafah once political and security conditions allow in order to ensure the EU third party role at the Rafah Crossing Point, as set out in the 2005 Agreement on Movement and Access (AMA).
