On 8 March 2018, H.E. Hazem Khairat, Ambassador of Egypt to Israel welcomed the Head of the European Union Border Assistance Mission in Rafah, Guenther Freisleben to an introductory meeting at his residence in Tel Aviv.
Mr. Freisleben outlined the fundamental role of the Mission in monitoring and mentoring and briefed the Ambassador on the activities currently conducted by the Mission to build a robust border management capacity within the group of Palestinian Authority border officials.
Ambassador Khairat stressed the priority for Egypt to achieve a just and lasting peace between the Palestinian Authority and Israel on one hand and an intra-Palestinian reconciliation on the other. Mr. Khairat also voiced his concern as to the severe humanitarian conditions prevailing in the Gaza Strip and underlined the role of Hamas in progressing the reconciliation process.
The meeting was attended by the embassy’s First Secretary Usama Al-Sayyed and Political Counsellor Ahmed Elhamshary and took place in the context of the Missions contribution to the liaison between the Palestinian, Israeli and Egyptian authorities in aspects related to border management.
