EU Civilian Operations Commander Visits EUBAM Rafah

For the first time since his appointment as the CivOpsCdr in September 2018, Vincenzo Coppola visited the European Union Border Assistance Mission for the Rafah Crossing Point (EUBAM Rafah).

The EU Civilian Operations Commander Vincenzo Coppola and the Head of the Operations Division at CPCC Jean Marc Pisani visited the two CPCC Missions in the territories; EUBAM Rafah and EUPOL COPPS, located respectively in Ramat Gan and Ramallah.

The four-day visit, which took place from 9 to 12 April 2019, comprised of meetings with both EU Missions’ members, representatives of the EU Community as well as meetings with strategic Israeli and Palestinian counterparts, including but not limited to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the General Administration for Borders and Crossings.

During the visit, Governor Nazmi Mhanna, General Director of GABC, welcomed the visiting delegation at Al-Karama terminal in Jericho which serves as the main outlet for Palestinian passengers between Palestine and Jordan, and toured the premises for a better insight on the situation on the ground and a finer understanding of the counterpart’s needs. In the course of the tour, the visiting delegation stopped by the training center funded by EUBAM and the Command, Control and Communications Center that is currently under construction.

The visit was concluded by a call on EUBAM mission members and casual talks on several arising matters over a light Palestinian lunch hosted by the staff.
